Each year at the end of our competition we paste the winning poster up on city streets around Australia with the hope that it create’s conversations about the issue(s) the poster presented. This was the vision that sparked the idea for Positive Posters (PP) back in ‘09.

The vision that sparked Positive Posters was to paste-up posters around the world that would create a conversation about global issues. Issues that people like you cared about, because without these conversations change cant happen. In 4 years we’ve managed to do this around Australia, but today we are taking a step closer in achieving our goal on a larger scale.

In 2011, we made a decision to remove sponsor logos from the bottom of the winning poster that was pasted on the streets. Ever since and with the help of generous sponsors who supported our decision, we’ve paid for the winning poster to be distributed throughout cities around Australia. This has always been our biggest expense.

This way of funding the distribution was not complimentary to our vision. Leaning solely on corporate sponsorship puts too much pressure on one company, limiting finances and limiting the size and reach of Positive Posters locally and globally.

While we have been lucky to have sponsors like Grill’d, Rogerseller, K.W.Doggett Fine Paper and RedInk Printing, finding continued sponsors can be extremely difficult and understandably so.

2013 – Kind of like Kickstarter…

This year we’re introducing a community distribution model (think Kickstarter but tiny, and just for PP.) Individuals and companies can now fund and choose which city the posters are pasted up in. Each street poster costs $5 to print and paste up.

So from now on the number of posters we distribute is entirely based on the we can raise as a community.

In looking to all of you, we remove pressure off a single sponsor and share the responsibility amongst the whole community giving us the best chance of growing the distribution both around Australia and internationally.

For the non-designers

This decision wasn’t just about making our fundraising job easier. Every year, without fail, we are asked by designers who haven’t entered and non-designers, how they can help contribute to what we do. At the 2012 exhibition we gave people the opportunity to pick a city and donate to the distribution, the feedback from the community was amazing.

How you can make a big impact?

Those (individuals or companies) looking to make a massive impact can! As a way of showing our appreciation, if you donate $400 or more we will put your brand or photo on our home page linked to a location of your choice e.g. twitter or a website.

We will also promote you or your brand as a major supporter of Positive Posters to all of our buddies across PP social media. This is a way of us saying thanks! For more information contact us here (nick@positive-posters.com), we’d love to hear from you:

What you can do right now?

1. Visit our home page (www.postive-posters.com) and donate ($5 or more) to put Marc’s 2012 winning poster up in 1 of 3 cities for this years distribution. Your name will then be placed on our donor list.

2. Share this post with people who you think would love to get involved. Remember, use the hashtag #pponwalls so we can creep on you

3. Know a someone who can really help us paste posters up in a new city? Let us know nick@positive-posters.com

Targets, Goals & Stats

No. of Melbourne Posters = 1,250
No. of Sydney Posters = 1,250
No. of Adelaide Posters = 500
Total Posters: 3,000

Posters Pasted Up: August 12th, 2013

50 days to raise the money

44 posters per day

Thanks for being awesome and supporting PP.

Nick, Tim, Leisha & Alex

Okay. Here goes. It is my absolute pleasure to announce that Marc Clancy (@clangaz) from Melbourne, Australia was last Thursday awarded first place in the 2012 Positive Posters competition. Our judges results came back a few weeks earlier and it’s been a tough job keep our mouths shut about it.

1st Place: Marc Clancy, Aus
2nd Place: Ali Masumbeigi, Iran
3rd Place: Babak Safari, Iran

Marc’s poster is an perfect example of the kind of design we love and want to see more of. It stands out. It draws you in. It hit’s you with a message, and most importantly, it makes you think and encourages a conversation. The poster needed no description, and the title ‘Homeless’ was perfect.

We all know that we have been and continue to treat our planet poorly and it’s becoming increasingly clear that animals and their environments are being damaged as a result. Marc’s poster has lead me to do some of my own research and think a little more about my own impact on the planet.

For his efforts, Marc will receive a copy of Adobe CS6 and his poster, with your help, will be pasted up around Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide in the coming months (learn more about how you can help).

Second and third place’s went to two Iranian designers, Ali Masumbeigi & Babak Safari for their posters, “Peace no war‘ and “Peace“.

Ali will receive a Wacom Intuos 5 Tablet and Babak will be sent a prize pack from Safari Living. (Read more about the prizes here)

I’ll be writing more about this later in the week, but this year we are asking our community to help us fund the distribution of Marc’s poster around Australia. You can read more about it over on a blog post written by Loud&Clear.

Congratulations to everyone who entered this year, and thank you.

We haven’t really explained properly what has happened with Sex, Drugs & Helvetica.

Here’s the deal.

Last year, after to listening to the feedback from a lot of design students from around Australia, we decided to run a one off, single day conference for emerging designers that cost $40. The aim was to give students some practical advice about how to get a job, invoice clients, understand long and short grain paper etc.

Last year it was run by Positive Posters as a fund raiser. At the time we had no intention of doing another one.

However, we received a lot of emails over the break asking when the next one would be held. So we got together and decided that it might be the kind of thing that we’d like to do for a while. Sex, Drugs & Helvetica is now it’s own (for profit) company that is separate to Positive Poster (a non-profit organisation). Tenielle & I from PP are also running SD&H with Zac (who you might already know) and Andy.

We hope to run events for emerging designers that are affordable, rich in quality informative content and fun.

Our next conference is happening in Melbourne on Friday September 28th. The speakers this year are:

• Beyond The Pixels
• Buro North
• Chase & Galley
• The Hungry Workshop
• Luke Lucas
• Motherbird

They have all been asked to talk about one of their favorite project in detail from start to finish. The ups, the downs, the production, client issues, everything. A real behind the scenes look at their work.

If you’re interested in coming along you can get tickets here: www.sexdrugshelvetica.com

And, if you’ve got any questions, shoot Tenielle an email tenielle@sexdrugshelvetica.com

Hope that covers everything

(SD&H on Twitter)

- Nick

Ps. Here is this years poster all folded up (with some mad Instagram filter)
