2012 Brief

2012 Brief

We’re back for another year, with another competition, and another exhibition. For designers, it’s a chance to show the world what you care about and also what you’ve got – all at once.

Is there an issue you think needs more attention? If you could change anything what would it be? We’d like you to take a break from study or work and put pen to paper, mouse to screen, whatever you like.

Show, don’t tell; what better advice to give. Your poster will be seen by thousands of people from over 150 countries around the world, countries that don’t necessarily speak your language. So it’s your challenge to design a poster that doesn’t rely on words, and represents an issue that a global audience can understand.

Your idea, issue, and message – it’s your poster and it has a voice. We’re listening.

We’ll print the winning poster and stick it… everywhere.

We’ll share your issue and your design with a global following. Together we’ll document year by year the issues that our generation care about the most.

We think that’s pretty cool and we hope you do too.

The competition opens 1st August and closes 30th September.

  1. simon says:

Umm. Isn’t this the same as last year?

    • nick says:

Yeah it is. And I can explain why. When we looked at last years entries compared to the other two years, we were so much more inspired and intrigued by the 2011 ones because each one was different and unique.

To choose one issue or theme and say, “Go design something about that”, was very difficult to do after seeing the entries that last year’s brief produced.

      Does that make sense mate?

We know that giving you guys restrictions in the brief is a good idea because it helps you focus, but seeing posters come through from people when they have thought up the topic themselves is very powerful.

  2. Katja says:

What’s wrong with it being the same as last year? It was open. The variety and quality and passion in the work that came from that work was incredible. There’s no way people have run out of things to care about and want to bring to peoples attention via visual communication.

Give yourself a brief if you need further prompting. It is difficult sometimes for creatives to work without a brief and other constraints – but that’s the challenge. And that’s fun – that’s exciting and that’s what we should be doing. I’m pretty excited about this, though.

A year has passed, peoples skills and intellect have developed – and new issues have arisen or come to our attention. There is no shortage of things to do!

  3. simon says:

Yep totally makes sense. Calm down Katja, I was just checking.

Just hoping I didn’t use all the good ideas last year! Maybe I’ll stick with the same issues and try and make the poster even better :)

    Looking forward to the entries.

  4. Judit says:

    ♥ yeiiiii…finally!

  5. Seval says:

Hi Nick. Could I possibly get a copy of the terms and conditions? The link in your pdf brief is not working.
    Thanks, S.

  6. Ibrahim says:

So i can design anything under my own topic but based on some issue right? Already i have participated in the 2010 competition and now only i’m going participate again. This time i’m gonna take it very seriously. This is really a very great and creative competition.

  7. tenielle says:

    Hey Ibrahim,

That’s right – it’s an open brief, so it gives you the opportunity to pick a social issue your passionate about and present it to the world.

Have fun! Can’t wait to see your entry.

Thanks for the kudos too – Good luck!

  8. Tuan says:

Really disappointed by the non-brief… I participated to the 2010 competition because i admired the “positive” attitude, and was grateful to be selected among the last 30. Then the winning entry was not really popular, basically because it used the word “frown” that is not commonly understood by non English people (i lived in hong kong back then). It already lost the immediate impact of the 2009 winning entry, the smile.
Then i didnt see the posters of the 2011 anywhere in HK or Asia.
Now the competition has lost the positive side, it has become open to anything. I regret that, I thought there was a long term ambition behind the project but now it has become something like “throw what u have and we’ll see what we can fish”. Giving a subject not only allows to focus but also to bring various views on a particular topic from different sensibilities.
So i will not participate this year either. Just wanted to give my opinion on PP, if it matters.
    Cheers!

    • nick says:

Hey Tuan and Bridget. Thanks for the comments. Really appreciate you letting us know how you feel.

I kind of addressed this last year in a blog post. (http://positive-posters.com/episode-4-defining-positive/)

In the early days of PP we didn’t do a very good job of explaining what we were about and what we wanted to do. The name “Positive Posters” was a reference to what we hoped the outcomes of the posters would be, not the posters themselves. I agree that there were a couple of posters from last years competition that were not ‘positive’ to look at or didn’t feel ‘positive’, but we think that the outcomes of seeing them and learning about the issues related to them are.

Bridget, your ideas about donating and selling books etc. are very much along the lines of what we are thinking. Unfortunately we can’t work full time on PP which means that those sort of changes take time.

Tuan, shame to hear you wont be taking part this year. We know that PP isn’t for everyone, but we hope that what we do gives some designers an opportunity to educate and inspire people about important issues so that they can start to be addressed.

Thanks so much for the feedback guys. Any more comments, throw them at us.

  9. Bridget says:

I sort of agree with Tuan that it’s a shame the posters have gone from something positive and uplifting… to posters like a duck hanging from plastic or a blood spattered knife. There’s no real ‘positivity’ in those posters. They just focus on a negative problem and do nothing to actually help the problem. It’s awareness with no action.

It would be great if the winning poster could be something ‘Positive Posters’ could help with. If it was about lack of education in Africa then Positive Poster’s could raise money from the entrants (perhaps a small fee to enter) to send books over? Do something to help the problem?

I sort of miss the whole reason I thought ‘Positive Posters’ was great. Because the posters used to give you a feel good fuzzy feeling.

Does that all make sense? I’m not trying to be a know-it-all bitch. I know you guys work super hard.

Just be nice for you guys you get that ‘positive’ feeling again.

  10. Tim Baker says:

Awesome Nick and Co! Looking forward to putting something together this year and tearing myself away from the IT world for a bit.

  11. Bridget says:

Oh cool! I never saw that video until now. Cheers!

While it’s not said in the brief, what I’m picking up is to inspire action. So I’m going for that.

I hope you didn’t take anything I said the wrong way. I still think Positive Posters is great and gives people a great opportunity to do their thing while educating people about issues important to them.

  12. Bridget says:

    Sorry I have another question.

How do you decide a winner? Is it the issue? How you communicated it? The design? How many people ‘like’ it? The number of comments on it?

What sort of things are taken into consideration when deciding what is top 30 worthy and what isn’t?

    :) Thanks for reading,
    Bridge

    • Nick says:

Hey B. all good, keep them coming.

The winner and top 30 are chosen based on their ability to communicate their intended message.

Social media like and shares and the issue, topic or theme don’t count.

If we and our judges think that your poster communicates a message with clarity and is also original then you will do well.

Sometimes people design posters that have a great message behind them but the poster doesn’t really communicate the message well or to enough people. We’re an international competition so it helps if your poster talks to people from all over the world, not just those from your own country.

      Does that answer your question?

  13. Paul says:

Are the prizes getting less each year?

  14. Bridget says:

    Sure does.
I was thinking about it on the bus how difficult it must be to pick the top 30 :) With so many great entry’s and messages… I was browsing through ones last year… There are so many you could include.
    Thanks for clarifying!
    -Bridge

  15. Nicolas Mendoza says:

You know, you could’ve just made a web page containing the same thing as the PDF, easier to maintain, easier to read on any device, and links would work for anyone. And yes people could save the page for offline usage too ;)

Good luck to everyone nevertheless ;)

    • nick says:

True mate. Things have been a bit hectic this year. Hence the little work-arounds we’ve had to do. Appreciate the feedback though.

  16. Abhee says:

    Hey Nick and team,

Congratulations on the opening of this years competition. I think you guys are doing a great job by creating these opportunities. Its good to know that the brief is the same as last year cos once again it gives everyone an equal and individual voice and enables them to say exactly what they want in their own very unique way.

Last year there were so many brilliant designs across such diverse issues and the issues have only increased, if anything, in the year gone by since.

More than the prizes or rather which posters made the top 30 it would be more meaningful for participants to learn how these posters are helping in changing peoples thinking / outlook / attitudes, etc. and if they have made a difference in any way.

Look forward to participating this year.

    Good luck mate.

    • nick says:

      Hey Abhee,

Great to hear form you. Agreed, if we could capture that information it would be much greater than any prize I could think of!

      Nick

  17. renee says:

just wondering, what are the prizes for this year’s pp? and also is there a way you can find out who liked your pp?

    thanks!

    • nick says:

      Hey Renee,

So I actually had a couple of meeting today to finalise the prizes for this year. We’ll be announcing more info soon.

Re: who likes your posters, at this stage no. The likes are run through Facebook and Twitter and we can’t find out who individually likes your posters through those means.

      Nick

  18. Phoebe Billy says:
